What Is The Correct Dosage Of Glucosamine Supplement When Using It To Treat Arthritis?

By Steve Weber

Glucosamine is well known for being one of the safest medications available to treat Arthritis. Although there is very little threat involved, these dosages need to be administered properly to achieve substantial results. The dosage can vary according to the age and medical condition of the patient.

Glucosamine supplements are available as oral and topical products. Oral supplements can be a capsule, tablet, powder or liquid. Normally for Adults, the initial dosage is 1500mg of glucosamine per day. This can be broken down into a dosage of 500mg, three times a day. Certain publications have also recommended a dose of 20miligrams per kilogram of body mass once a day.

According to research studies, glucosamine produces better results, when combined with chondroitin. Hence, physicians have made it a practice to prescribe a dosage of 1500mg of glucosamine with 1200mg of chondroitin per day. This course usually runs for a term of 1-3 months. Once the initial treatment is over, the dosage can be brought down to 1000mg of glucosamine and 800mg of chondroitin.

Almost all supplements need to be consumed after meals, unless it is a topical application. Although glucosamine happens to be a dietary supplement, it is better not to give them to children. Since, very little testing has been done on this matter, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The dosage for pets is usually measured by the weight of the pet. If the pet is below 10 pounds, it is recommended to give a dose of 300mg of glucosamine per day. Pets between, 10 and 30 pounds are given a dose of 600mg, while 30-60 pound pets are given 1200 and all pets above 60 pounds are given a dose of 1800mg of glucosamine per day. A chondroitin supplement of 125mg, 250mg, 500mg and 700mg can be included in the diet respectively.

There are over 50 companies that produce glucosamine MSM supplements worldwide. However, not all these products are of high quality and standard. You may come across certain brands that are cheap but they may not have the quality you are looking for. It is better to take a high dosage of a good brand for a short period of time rather than a high dosage of a cheap brand. Cheaper brands may seem economical at first but ultimately you will not achieve anything if the supplement cannot produce the desired results.

The information provided in this article is only a guide to understand the different dosing methods followed by physicians with regard to Glucosamine with chondroitin. Even if you are familiar with these concepts, it is safer to follow the instructions of a Doctor and allow him or her to monitor your dosage.
