Buy Medical Aid Before You Have A Baby

By Susan Renolds

A young married couple who is thinking of expanding its family should consider buying medical aid. Having a baby is expensive, and it is best to have the peace of mind knowing that these expenses are covered. In that way, the couple can focus on all the positive aspects of beginning a family.

Being able to afford a private hospital gives the couple more options. Health cover provides the couple with the ability to do this. It is also useful in the unlikely event that there might be any complications during the pregnancy or birth. While a few women choose to give birth to their babies at birth centers or at home, most of them do this at a hospital.

Some mothers to be end up giving birth en route to the hospital. Women need the assurance that there are trained medical personnel on hand to deal with this situation. Those who are unable to afford the cover, usually have to put the idea of giving birth on hold until they are able to afford cover.

Public health care is free to those who use it, however the standard of treatment is not the same as that of a private hospital. The couple will have much more say regarding the pregnancy at a private hospital. This gives the couple much more reassurances regarding having a baby.

Matters do not always go as planned during the nine months of a pregnancy. Should any matter arise, the expectant mothers will feel much more comfortable with the doctor, who has been with them throughout the pregnancy. Another benefit is that private hospital patients normally have a private room to stay in at the hospital. This is far better than being placed in a general ward.

The quality of follow-up care after the birth is equally important to the care given prior to the birth. The child and mother will need to see the doctor at strategic times in the ensuing months. This allows the doctor to see that all is well with mother and child. Having the same doctor attend to this stage of the birth will give the couple more reassurance.

The couple should add the baby to the medical aid policy right away. This will give the couple the assurances that the baby is covered in the event of any illness. Speaking to a broker or agent will give the couple all the information required to make an informed decision regarding the most suitable option.
