Marijuana Proven by Medical Research as an Appetite Stimulant - Marinol

Appetite stimulants like Dexamethasone and Megace are recommended by doctors to ensure their patients get enough nutritious food to maintain bodily functions. Loss of appetite is frequent among cancer and AIDS patients due to drug and chemotherapy treatments affecting the desire to eat. Anorexics may also be prescribed appetite stimulants to help with their condition and spur weight gain

Marijuana as an Appetite Stimulant

Medical research has confirmed that the active constituents of marijuana also stimulate the appetite. According to the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy, the drug Marinol, generically known as dronabinol, contains delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as its main active ingredient. THC is the compound in marijuana that produces its mental effects, such as sensory enhancement and mood alteration. Dronabinol is also being explored for other conditions including Multiple Sclerosis, pain relief and glaucoma, according to the University.

The natural plant form of marijuana has the same potent stimulating effect on the appetite, but currently this herbal remedy is illegal in most states. Only the synthetic version is currently legal and available only by prescription.
