How to Recognize and Overcome Obstacles to Fitness

By Gina Pears

Many people have a goal of improving their fitness level, but something always seems to get in the way. Finding excuses to not exercise, like a lack of time or motivation, is easy to do. The following are some ways to help you get past your limitations and obstacles to getting fit.

One apparently strange but not uncommon reason people don't exercise is that they feel too out of shape to begin. This may sound silly, but it's a real concern for many people. Starting to exercise when you're not in the best shape can provoke anxiety in many people. In some cases, people will join a class or try running or some other activity and find that it tires them out quickly. The truth is, almost everyone can exercise, but you have to begin at the right place, no matter how basic. Your doctor can advise you about what type of exercise is appropriate if you have any illness or serious condition. One of the best exercises to start with is walking, either outdoors or on a treadmill, and you can begin at any pace that's comfortable for you.

Is your difficulty participating in a fitness program due to an illness, injury, or some other long term health challenge? You can find a way around physical limitations because of the variety of exercises you can do. If you have limited to no use of your legs, for example, you can work out your upper body.

If a heart condition prevents you from doing a strenuous work out, you can do gently exercises in water or go walking. Your doctor and a fitness trainer can help you build a fitness program around your specific needs. Many people quit when they don't see immediate results after starting out with unrealistic expectations. Improving your health and fitness will not happen overnight. You may find that it will take longer than you'd like to reach your goal, whether that is to lose a certain amount of weight or to build muscle.

Doing nothing won't get you to your goal but exercising will get you there eventually. Try to maintain a more relaxed approach to your fitness program rather than expecting big results in a short amount of time. Finding a reason to quit or not to start a fitness program can be very easy. But if you're honest with yourself, you'll see that they're really just excuses. You can find an exercise routine that works for you regardless of your particular challenges such as working out using an upright exercise bike. These tips will help you as you begin a fitness routine to reach your goals.
