How to Handle The Mental Stress of A Car Accident

By John Cruise

CRASH! In an instant your world can change from the simple decisions of : "Where am I going to eat for lunch today?" to, "WHAT DO I DO UNIVERSE??, I AM ON THE BRINK OF A MELTDOWN!!". Ok well It might not be that drastic but if you have been in a car accident, THINGS GET REAL, FAST. The simple stresses of life fall away and you now start to think to yourself, "Is my neck going to hurt forever", "What if the insurance doesn't pay for this", "what if I ruptured some random organ and the doctors overlook it and I'm dead in a week". This sounds crazy, but our thoughts get the best of us especially in high stress situations.

It super simple and can sometimes be overlooked. Keeping a tight rein your thoughts after a car accident can keep you in a state of peace. During an accident your thoughts can get so loud that it keeps you from being able to effectively handle the situation.

Use your imagination here.

Your car traps you in with a crushed driver side door. There is crushed glass everywhere. Someone ran a stop sign and plowed into your car, and now your mind begins to create negative thoughts. "I'm dying! " "My heart is beating so fast am I having a heart attack? " "My arm hurts, oh god it must be broken" "My insurance premiums are going to go through the roof ." "This wasn't my fault, but no one is going to help me! " those kinds of thoughts do nothing to help your situation. HERE is the first thing to do

TAKE A BREATH. focus on your breathing and everything else falls away. This allows you to bring your attention back to the present moment Take a deep breath and count to 4, Breathe out then count to six This will keep the fearful thoughts from clouding your judgement.

BE PRESENT. Thinking, "I should have taken a different route" is not going to help you in this moment. There is nothing you can do to change the past So be in the present moment and accept where you are Looking back will not help you now, move forward.

ACCEPT THE SITUATION. When something traumatic happens in our lives the first thing we want to do is run away. We dream of being somewhere else. This is a sign of resistance We can reach inner peace by allowing ourselves to stop resisting. Accept your circumstances and what has happened. If you stop running and face your reality head on, miracles happen The ability to change our reality is opened up and we can see the moment for what it truly is.

BE GRATEFUL. If you can stand up, walk, talk, and only have a dent in your car, then that sounds like one lucky day. Some people don't walk away. So take some time to see that you could of had it worse, but the amazing thing is that you didn't! Changing your view of the situation can have a profound effect on your peace.

Life is a gift if we choose to see it that way. It's that simple.
