Indoor tanning lotions work by increasing blood flow to the skin or by promoting melanin production. Both of these result in an increased amount of melanin on the top skin layers. These products do not contain sunscreen and should not be mistaken for a skin protectant. To achieve desired results, this should be used in conjunction with a tanning bed or booth that gives of an ultraviolet source.

Melanin and L-Tyrosine are most common active ingredients found in these tanning products. Other possible ingredients: oils, green tea extract and copper. Some products include ingredients that offer moisturizing and bronzing. Indoor tanning creams should are not for outdoor use because they do not protect against the sun.

The product designed to handle use in the outdoors is known as sunscreen or sunblock. This product may come in spray, gel or cream form. The formula can absorb or reflect UV radiation from the sun. This is commonly utilized for sunburn prevention.

In general, sunscreens contain at least one of these ingredients: organic particulates, inorganic particulates, organic chemical compounds. There are two primary classifications for these products: physical, which reflect sunlight, or chemical, which absorb ultraviolet light. The use of sunscreen is recommended because it is believed to prevent sunburn, cancer and other harmful effects caused by UV radiation.

Sun tan lotion is a term that may be used to describe indoor tanning creams or sunblock. These products, though quite different in their design and usage, are topical formulas that are applied to the skin. Sunscreen is used to protect and tanning creams enhance tanning.
