All About Removable Ink Tattoos

By Kenneth Orr

Throughout history, tattoos have always been painful to get and painful to have removed. The laser treatments to have the tattoos removed have certainly made the process safer than the older methods, but it always takes several sessions for the removal to be complete.

There is now a new development in tattoo ink which could help to solve this problem. It is called removable ink and while it is permanent while it is in the skin, it only takes one laser treatment to completely remove it.

This new ink was developed by a company called Freedom-2, LLC and is based on research by scientists at Harvard Medical School and Duke University. It comes packaged in tiny polymer microspheres that remain intact while the ink is in the skin, but explode when hit with a laser.

When this happens, the biodegradable ink dissolves and will be absorbed within the body. It will disappear and leave no evidence of the old tattoo. It seems that it is also a lot safer than the conventional inks that may contain toxic substances, such as cobalt and iron. These may sometimes cause allergic reactions.

Reports regarding this new, removable ink say that the ink is safer because it's soluble (some are vegetable-based). Soluble is generally not what people want in tattoo ink, but because it's encapsulated, it remains permanent until the capsule is burst by laser.

The ink is also expected to be more stable over time because of the encapsulation, meaning that it won't migrate and fade like conventional inks might. The new ink was released in 2007 and currently, only black ink is available.

Currently, Freedom-2 is working on the development of removable inks in a wide range of colors and all of the inks are expected to be a little more expensive than the conventional tattoo inks.

Why might you want to use removable ink instead of the conventional ink? the most obvious reason is that you might want to remove the tattoo later in life. About one in four American adults will have at least one tattoo and about 17% of them have reported that they have considered having them removed.

With the removable ink, you will find that the removal process will be less painful and a lot less expensive. Also, there are the safety claims that are an important consideration if they are actually able to be substantiated.

The next time you are consulting with your tattoo artist, you might want to inquire about the removable ink. Of course, it is important to remember that at this time, only the black ink is available. However, more colors soon be coming out soon. The price of your tattoo may be a little higher, however, you will have the option of removing the tattoo much easier than ever before. So this is an option that you will really want to consider.
