Information About Getting A Skin Tan

By Veronica Cappelletti

The skin is made to have a tan or a deeper color than it usually has using a method called skin tanning. A natural way of tanning is to expose oneself to the ultraviolet radiation found in sunlight or to use of the many artificial products which allow for a type of tanning called sunless tanning. People have started to prefer tanning that is not connected to sunlight when scientists discovered the inherent link of UV radiation to some forms of skin cancer.

A method of getting skin tanned using the ultraviolet radiation is simply baking the skin using sunlight, which constitutes a leisure activity known as sunbathing. Sunbathing is the most commonly used techniques of causing skin to tan. Windburn is another phenomenon that can increase the extent of suntan. It is the removal of the UV-inhibiting layer of skin by wind therefore allowing sunlight to set in and increase the degree of tanning.

Besides the sun one can also achieve skin tanned from UV is by using a device referred to as a tanning bed or a sunbed which produces UV radiation artificially. Sunbeds have fluorescent bulbs infused with phosphor and produce rays identical to those of sunlight. Besides a small portion of UV B, most of the radiation produced is UV A using this device has little difference from sunbathing.

You an also get a skin tan without sunlight or any form of ultraviolet source. The technique of doing so is called fake tanning or sunless tanning. In this process, chemicals are used to induce tanning like that of sunlight. These chemicals are taken as pills or applied onto skin.

Pills containing beta-carotene have become very useful for non-UV tanning because they produce a lasting effect and protect against sunburn. Sunburn is the discoloring of the skin due to excessive exposure to sunlight. Beta-carotene produces a better skin tone than sun tanning and eliminates the risk of cancer posed by the sun.

There are other different compounds besides beta-carotene that are used to manufacture UV-free tanning products. Pills or products based on beta-carotene remain the most popular choice for getting a tan, though. Also, some people have started to use temporary tanning solutions like creams and powders that come off when cleaned with water.
