Choosing The Correct Pain Pain Relief Medication

By Gary Sgro

Aches and pains are a part of everyone's life at some point. While individuals often take a handful of OTC NSAIDs others are unable to handle the side effects. While prescription medications are available, many also fear the chances of addiction. Natural alternatives offer a better pain relief for many.

Capsaicin is applied as a rub and effective for several conditions such as arthritis, shingles or neuropathy. The cream is made from the heat of chili peppers and shown to desensitize the nerves temporarily. The medication provides help for up to five weeks before sensitivity is regained, often long enough to allow healing to occur.

Arnica helps to relieve swelling after injuries or surgery. It is from a flower grown in Europe and provides anti-inflammatory properties. It works best when used in addition to ice and other medications. It can be used orally or as an ointment.

Aquamin is a red seaweed supplement helpful with osteoarthritis. It is high in magnesium and calcium to help reduce joint inflammation. It also may replace these minerals to reduce osteoporosis. It is an inexpensive option that requires daily use for the most benefits.

SAM-e can also help with osteoarthritis. It is a naturally occurring amino acid for oral use and packaged in capsules. SAM-e reduces inflammation and helps to release serotonin and dopamine, feel good chemicals, in the brain. It has been shown by studies to be as effective as NSAIDs in cases of osteoarthritis. However, it often takes a couple of weeks of regular use to make a difference. It causes fewer problems with the stomach and poses no cardiovascular risks.

Fish oil can help with joint problems due to arthritis and autoimmune disorders. When digested, the oil breaks into prostaglandins, to help reduce inflammation. Cod-liver oil may help individuals to reduce use of NSAIDs by 1/3 or more. Neck and back problems improve even more with more than 2/3 being able to stop the use of NSAIDs within ten weeks of beginning daily supplements with this oil.

MSM, a sulfur derivative can help to slow degeneration of joints and cartilage. In as little as three months, individuals complain of less suffering and see an increase in function. MSM is shown to work best when combined with Glucosamine.

Natural pain relief methods allow individuals to reduce their use of OTC and prescription medications. They are particularly effective when side effects of the other medications cause problems. Before eliminating prescription meds, the individual should speak to his or her doctor. With the wide variety available one or more may reduce aches.
