The way we think has a large part to play in our regulation of stress.

Stress busting activities are essential, so please don't think I'm suggesting you shouldn't use them.

With that said, the top contributory and typically overlooked factor to the encounter of unhealthy stress is our outlook.

My suggested way out of the problem is this. Use relaxing and calming strategies, but consider using them in connection with strategies that can help to re-structure the way you generally interpret things.

Improving your ability to see things differently (noticing the bigger picture) will enable you to manage stress better.

Our perception can be really complicated.

I can recall one icy morning. I was walking to my office. All I could see was slippery freezing ice. It felt like I was going to drop at every step.

I recall noticing a flashing picture of myself, in my mind, falling and smacking my head on a stone. I grabbed the nearest thing I could find and held on tightly. I certainly did not want to die.

Then it happened...

I saw this chap, ski along. I think he was even whistling to himself as he passed by smoothly. It was obvious that he was not apprehensive in the least.

This caused an extreme shock to my system, and boy was I humiliated. Why was i letting the ice to bully me in this manner? What was interesting with this predicament was that I knew how to Ice skate, and I have been to the ice ring on many occasion. So I decided to copy the boy.

At that particular point, my fear and worries about dying from falling vanished completely. Ice skating was a skill I already owned. All I had to do was to use this skill.

This small tale gives a good viewpoint into how to keep control of stress better. Our reactions to difficult situations is routinely decided by our view that those situations far surpass our ability and individual resources to manage them.

Taking time to examine the larger picture, could help us see that we actually have the skill to manage those situations.
