The only problem is that the receptionist is paid NOT to give you an answer but rather to talk you to the point of exasperation until you have no alternative but to make an appointment for the expensive 'office visit'.

It's as if every US dentist has somehow has agreed, either by a unconscious suggestion implanted at medical school or perhaps a mind-thought inculcated by a secret medical society that dentists can not give out prices on the telephone...
99.9% of dentists and their receptionists will not give you information you ask for about the price of dental treatments over the telephone. It has to be some "standard operating procedure" for dentists in the U.S. It's only when you make an appointment to visit the dentist - which you must pay for - that you will be given prices and perhaps some brochures on how to finance your payments.
The problem is that many Americans today are struggling to make ends meet and trying to find the best dental treatment for a fair price is naturally a serious concern. So it's a shame that dentists in general don't seem to appreciate that and they seem to be only concerned with their bottom line instead of how they might best respond to their patient's inquiries.
The US dental industry has decided that protecting itself from fair economic competition is more important than the dental health of a great majority of its fellow citizens.
