The Dangers Of Pathological Hoarding

By Leo Samuel

Collecting things you have had in the past is normal. Surely, everyone loves to hold on to some precious stuffs, especially those that present the sweetest and most cherished life memories. But there are people who may take this activity a little too far and extreme.

In psychology, there is a big difference between hoarding and collecting. The truth is, many psychologists see hoarding as pathological collecting. Whereas collecting is a normal human act, compulsive hoarding is a behaviour that compels a person to excessively acquire items which may have little or no value at all to other people. People with compulsive hoarding, also called hoarders, refuse to discard any of these items.

The risks of hoarding are plenty. First, it impairs the life of the hoarder. When the hoarder stores all items at home, the home instantly turns into something that is worse than a garbage pit. Stacked papers, malfunctioning appliances, shabby furniture, old dining ware and broken things permeate home spaces, causing anxiety on the hoarder and the rest of the family.

All the clutter can humiliate the hoarder. To repel the judgment of others, most hoarders tend to shy away from social circles and end existing relationships with their close friends. Fearing that they may be considered outcasts, some hoarders avoid social interaction.

Worried that you're turning into a hoarder? Conduct a meticulous self-check. Do you refuse to throw out things that are of no use and real value? Do you justify your hoarding tendencies by saying that you intend to use the stored items in the future, but never actually use them at all? Avoid turning your home into a huge pile of mess. Interact with a psychologist and discuss how you can conquer this behaviour. Better yet, contact a self storage provider in Singapore. Singapore self storage enables you to store your precious belongings in a secure place so you don't have to throw them away. It is time to do some cleaning!
