Remember To Get Your CEU Credits

By Elinor Tran

It may come as a surprise to many people, but just because you have finished your schooling and have a license to practice does not mean you can forget about learning. Professions in the health care industry are constantly evolving; new techniques and medicines are being discovered. In order to maintain a license to practice, a number of CEU credits are required regularly.

Depending on what state you live in, and what your job is, there are different requirements as to how many units you must complete each year. It is your responsibility to make sure any event or class you attend is properly accredited and reported to the licensing authority. You will receive a notice that tells you how many credits you need before your license expires.

Getting the necessary CEUs is not hard. Many employers offer classes or seminars throughout the year that will go toward your requirements. There are even some weekend long get-a-ways that will have enough different events going on to make sure you have all that you need for the year.

If your workplace does not offer training that is accredited, talk to your supervisor to find out if there is a way they can get the accreditation. Talk to co-workers to find out what they are doing to stay qualified. A group of you can get together to attend a lecture that counts and make an afternoon of it.

Take advantage of the classes you take and use them to further your career. If you know of a training class that is needed before you can change to a different area, attend it. There are many classes available for some type of management position, use them for your CEUs and to get a better job.

You can arrange to take your CEU Credits easily. Schedule them all together or take them scattered throughout the year. Most offerings are done on a routine basis, if you miss it this time around it will be given again soon. As long as you get them done before time to renew your license you will have no problems.
