Remember the Basics when Caring for Your Teeth

A great smile and a person's general dental health both depend upon that individual performing the basics of dental care every day. Namely, those basics are brushing one's teeth and flossing.

That is the first step to overcoming your fear; realizing that you're not alone. Realize that although your friends and family may make fun of you and trivialize your fear, it is real to you and should therefore be treated like a real fear.

Candy can be extremely difficult on your teeth and if you have any dental appliances in your mouth, you should be aware of what candy you need to avoid. Not only can you damage the appliances, but you may end up doing permanent damage to your teeth.

It is often a good idea to meet with a potential dentist before you commit to officially seeing him or her so you can try to get a feel for the office and see if it will be a good fit for you. These dentists will understand your fear and treat you with care so as not to aggravate your fears while you're in the dentist's chair.

Do not feel like you need to rush through these twice daily brushings. Take time to do the job properly and effectively clean the teeth for with dental care, as with so many other things in life, intent means less than action.

Avoiding such a wide variety of candies can be frustrating when you are digging through your trick-or-treating bag, but there are some candies that will probably not damage your dental equipment. If it can melt in your mouth, it will be easier on your teeth and any appliances in your mouth.

Throughout the Halloween season, it becomes even more important to be brushing and flossing on a daily basis. You want to make sure that you are consistently cleaning off all of the sugar that ends up on your teeth as a result of eating your Halloween candy.

A common mistake in this regard is to keep the toothbrush in a closed space or container for storage. Doings so fosters bacteria growth on the toothbrush and the toothbrush should therefore be kept stored in open spaces in an upright position if possible.

These therapies can include but are not limited to: systematic desensitization, exposure therapy, flooding, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Of course, people struggling with certain anxieties and phobias cannot be forced into changing and adapting; they must have a desire to overcome their fears first, and then the therapy will have a greater chance of truly helping them.
